How much does it cost to play World of Warcraft (WoW) in 2026?

Since its release in 2004, World of Warcraft (WoW) has released 11 expansions! Fortunately, as a new or returning player, you don’t need to buy each of these updates and games individually. And if you are planning on playing World of Warcraft: Forever or Classic, you don’t need to buy any expansions whatsoever!

Here is a quick breakdown of what WoW costs in 2026:

• Base Cost: $14.99 USD / month (Discounts apply for 3-, 6-, and 12-month plans).
• Current Expansion: Midnight requires a one-time purchase of $49.99+.
• Classic & Forever (launching Nov 4, 2026): Included for free with your base $14.99/mo subscription.
• Free to Play: You can play for free (excluding Classic) up to level 20 without a subscription.

If you can’t wait until November 4 to play WoW: Forever, you can buy the Skyborne epic pack ($59.99) or Warcraft Forever Collection ($79.99) to gain beta access now and access to the new Skyborne race. The $29.99 Skyborne pack gives you access to the new race at launch but won’t give you early beta access.

If you want to play World of Warcraft: Midnight, it will set you back an additional $49.99.

WoW subscription costs in the United States

When you buy longer subscriptions, you get a lower monthly price, but you have to pay upfront. Each tier you move up lowers the monthly price by $1.

So, if you opted for two 6-month subscriptions (or the full-year sub), you would save $24 per year. You’d also receive a couple of in-game rewards (typically mounts or transmog) reserved for players with a 6-month or 12-month subscription. These special bonuses for longer subscriptions are typically refreshed a couple of times a year. Active 12-month subscribers automatically receive the new mounts/bonuses in their Battle.net launcher as gifts when that refresh happens.

WoW subscription costs in Canada

The prices I quoted above only apply to players in the United States, where I live. If you are from another country, your costs may be slightly different.

How to pay for WoW without setting up a subscription

All prices mentioned so far are for players who set up recurring subscriptions on their accounts. This requires that you provide a credit card that will be charged on the renewal date. If you aren’t interested in a recurring subscription, you have a few other options…

Option 1: Buy 60 days of game time

The first alternative is to purchase 60 days of game time. You can do this through your Battle.net launcher shop or the online Blizzard Shop. When you purchase it, you get two months of game time for $29.99. Your time expires after 60 days, and you’ll need to buy more to keep playing. Some retail stores also sell digital and (occasionally) physical game time cards.

In addition to avoiding the subscription, game time is also a great way to gift playing time to a friend.

Option 2: How to Pay for a WoW Subscription with Gold (WoW Token)

Another alternative to a recurring subscription is to purchase your game time with WoW tokens. Unfortunately, this method requires active game time on your account (or a stash of gold from previous play) and the ability/time to make a decent amount of in-game gold.

To get a WoW token, you will need to farm up gold and buy one at the auction house. The token price will depend on how many tokens are available at the auction house, so I can’t give you an exact gold price here.

Purchasing World of Warcraft

Midnight is the most current World of Warcraft expansion and costs $49.99 (unless you get lucky and grab it on the rare sale).

How much does WoW: Forever and WoW Classic cost?

It will cost you the monthly membership price if you want to play WoW: Forever, WoW: Classic, or Mist of Pandaria (MoP) Classic. In the U.S., it costs $14.99/month. If you plan to play longer than a month, you can purchase a longer subscription for a lower per-month price.

Is there any way to play WoW for free?

If you want to try out World of Warcraft but aren’t ready to buy yet, you can play a free trial. This trial allows you to create and play a new character to level 20 in the game’s retail version. However, the free version has many restrictions, including how much gold you can have, what content you can play, and social interaction.

There is no free trial of WoW Forever, Classic, or MoP Classic.

Yes, a WoW subscription is definitely worth it in 2026!

As someone who has played World of Warcraft since 2005, I don’t think the value you get for the $15 monthly cost has ever been better. Not only do you get access to 20+ years of content, but you also get Mists of Pandaria Classic and WoW: Forever when it launches later this year. Pair that with the fact that the game is being updated more than ever before, meaning that there is always something new to do. World of Warcraft may not be everyone’s thing, but it is hard to deny that it is one of the best “bang for your buck” games on the market today.

The developers have added a lot of support for new and returning players in recent years, making now a great time to jump in and start your adventure!

While a lot of World of Warcraft content has been released since 2004, you don’t need to buy all of the past expansions. Except for Midnight, you can play every version of the game by signing up for a subscription or using a game time card. If you are a new player or just want to dabble with a low-level character, you can play World of Warcraft for free.
