BtwQuests Addon Guide – World of Warcraft (WoW)

Last Reviewed: March 23, 2024 by Archdruid Andoris Leave a Comment

A quick introduction to one of my favorite quest addons in World of Warcraft

BtwQuests is one of my favorite addons. It is also one that doesn’t get as much love as it deserves on the “best addon” lists posted by content creators. It isn’t flashy like WeakAuras or OPie, but it has saved me many times!

BtwQuests is a “quest journal” addon for retail WoW and Wrath Classic. It shows every major and minor quest chain in the game, broken out by expansion. With so much content in the game now, it can be overwhelming to untangle which quest line goes where, and BtwQuests does it beautifully!

Features: What does BtwQuests do?

Many achievements and other unlocks are gated by questlines. In the early days of unlocking allied races, it was frustrating for new players to earn those races because of required quest chains in expansions they never played. While Blizzard wisely changed those requirements, many unlocks still require completing certain quests.

BtwQuests cuts through all that with its easy-to-use journal layout.

The journal will not only show all the questlines in an expansion, but it also allows you to click on one to see every single quest in the chain! It will also show you the prerequisites for that quest and a starting location for the quest when selected.

Setup: How to install BtwQuests

Before we examine each of these features, let’s discuss installation quickly. Right now, the only way to install BtwQuests is from Curseforge. You can download the file from the website or use the Curseforge/Overwolf app.

BtwQuests is known as a “modular addon, ” meaning that each expansion has its own addon. That means you’ll need to download each expansion’s version of BtwQuests separately. For that reason, I recommend you use the Curseforge app because manual installation will be a beast otherwise.

For a step-by-step guide, check out my How to Install WoW Addons article.

How to use BtwQuests

BtwQuests doesn’t require much customization. After installing, you’ll notice that a small blue book will be added to your minimap icons (next to any other addon icons you have).

Clicking on the book will open a window and show the major questlines in the current expansion. You can also click the “Home” tab at the top to navigate to a list of all the expansion modules you have installed.

Digging into a campaign

The real power of BtwQuests is the ability to dig into individual quest lines. Let me show you how it works.

When writing this, the newest content is Dragonflight’s “Defenders of the Dream” campaign. When I click through to that, I see a list of all the individual questlines that make up the entire campaign.

In the screenshot below, you can see that each storyline is its own box. The ones that I have completed show a green check mark in the bottom right. Chains central to the main story (and usually key achievements or unlocks) have a golden crest in the bottom-left portion of the box.

Finally, quests I haven’t completed (no check mark) have a green outline, or they do not. The green outline means that the next quest I need is in my quest log, and no outline means I need to accept the next step somewhere.

Now that you understand how a campaign is structured, let’s look at a specific quest line.

Digging into a questline

When looking at all the quests in a campaign (“Defenders of the Dream” in this case), you can click on any box to view every quest in that chain. This will open a chart that shows every quest required to finish that little storyline.

For example, if I click on the “Misfit Dragons” quest chain, you can see that I have completed a few quests already and am currently working on “Home in Time for Tea.”

Hovering over a quest will show the requirements to complete it and the rewards you will receive when you do. Clicking on a quest will open your world map and show you where the objective is! Pretty nifty!

Other Settings in BtwQuests

At a basic level, that is all you need to know to use BtwQuests. The only other thing you might find helpful is to review the possible addon settings.

These settings are found by right-clicking the BtwQuests minimap icon or cogwheel near the “X” that closes the journal window. To change a setting, click on it to add or remove a checkmark.

Settings for BtwQuests include:

  • Show minimap icon
  • Show available quests
  • Use small icons for map pins
  • Show category as grid
  • Show category headers
  • Group completed
  • Group ignored
  • Show quest chain tooltip
  • Spoiler free
  • Use TomTom waypoints
  • Account-bound settings

Personally, I turn all the settings on except “Use small icons for map pins,” “Group Ignored,” and “Spoiler free” like this:

Final Thoughts and Important Links

As one final tip, the other thing I like about BtwQuests is that you can see where each of your character’s progress is on certain quests without having to log out. Click the dropdown arrow next to the cogwheel and choose your desired character!

This addon is so easy to set up and use, but it has made a massive difference for me. Let me know what you think of it in the comments below. Thanks for reading!
