Need to roll for a chest or a sweet trinket? Well, I won’t waste your time; I’ll jump straight to the point so you can win your roll!
You can roll for loot or a chest by typing the /roll or /rand command into chat. This will return a random number between 1 and 100. The group or raid member with the highest number is the winner.
Now that you won your loot, let’s take a deeper look at how rolling works and when you want to use it.
Why do you need to roll?
In some cases, several players will want a piece of gear or chest in a dungeon. To keep things fair, players will call for a group roll. Most of the time, you will roll in a range of 1 to 100, which is the default behavior of /roll and /random.
As an example, imagine you are playing retail WoW, and you finish a mythic dungeon. Someone in your group gets the trinket you really wanted from the dungeon (loot is distributed automatically). You ask if they need it (they don’t), but you and another player in the group both do. To figure out who should receive the trinket, you can both roll, and the trinket holder will trade it to the winner.
In Classic WoW, you will also have opportunities to roll for random chests that spawn in dungeons. These are often packed with gear, consumables, and other materials.
Changing roll range
If your group leader calls for a different range, you need to add the range after typing /roll. For example, if you are rolling against one other player and your group leader asks you to give a number between 1 and 10, you can type /roll 1-10. Alternatively, you can just write /roll 10 if you are starting at 1.
Is it cheating to change your range?
Wait, if you can change your range, why wouldn’t you just jack it up to a million and win all the loot?
Well, first off, it would be pretty obvious that something was wrong when to rolled 928,153.
The other thing that players would notice is the numbers in the parenthesis next to your roll. If you look closely, it will show the bottom and top numbers in the range so you can make sure other players aren’t trying to pull the wool over your eyes.
So, you might be able to get100 every time by typing /roll 100-100, but it isn’t likely to win you much loot (or respect from group members).
Using toys to roll
If you want to be fancy, you can use a toy like the Decahedral Dwarven Dice to generate random numbers. Unfortunately, the toy is tricky to collect because it is obtained by pickpocketing mobs found mainly in the Wrath of the Lich King zones. Unless you are lucky, you will have to set up a plan to farm it.
Classic WoW Rules: Need vs. Greed vs. Pass
So far, we have looked at how to manually roll the dice. If you are playing Classic WoW, awarding gear works a little differently. Instead of receiving loot automatically when looting something, you will choose between need (dice), greed (coin), or pass (red X).
Pressing the dice button will pit you against other players who also need the gear and award the gear randomly. If you select the coin, you will only win if the other players choose greed or pass. You will not beat need with greed.
Clicking the red X in the top corner will pass on the item.

Hi,
I have a question about rolling in raids.
So usually in the few raids I have taken part of, they use the option were the raid leader gets all the loot and gives it away to those who need it (decided by rolling for the loot like showed in this page).
however when a boss is defeated they drop various items so what I don’t know is how to state which Item I’m trying to roll for because usually I would only need 1 item.
At first I thought I had to write the name of the item next to the roll (/roll *name of the item*) but everyone rolls so fast that I doubt they’re actually tipping the names down.
any way great info on this page,
thanks for your attention.

Hey, sorry for the slow response Tom. You bring up a really good question and it is something I should probably add to this article. When you are raiding with an organized group where the raid leader gets the loot and hands it out they are probably using an addon. There are several addons that do that, the one I’ve used the most is RCLootCouncil. It allows you to click to roll on specific items and makes that process a lot easier.
