A complete guide on traveling to Zereth Mortis for World of Warcraft: Shadowlands players
Now that World of Warcraft is over 15 years old and 8 expansions deep, it is getting tricky to keep the geography straight. On top of that, many zones have unlock requirements which make things even more complicated. In this guide, I’ll dive into everything you need to know to get to Zereth Mortis, but for now, here is the quick answer:
You can get back to Zereth Mortis by using the northernmost portal on the 2nd floor in Oribos. If you haven’t been to Zereth Mortis before, you’ll need to reach level 60 and complete 2 chapters in both your covenant campaign and the Chains of Domination storyline. Once you’ve done that, a quest named Call of the Primus should pop up and lead you to Zereth Mortis.
Now that you have a high-level overview of the unlock process let’s dive into the details…
Where is Zereth Mortis located in WoW?
According to the official Blizzard website, Zereth Mortis is “tucked away in the fabric of the Shadowlands.” In other words, it is somewhere in the Shadowlands… but we don’t know exactly where. However, we know that the only way to reach Zereth Mortis is by a portal that requires each covenant’s sigil.
How to get to Zereth Mortis (unlock requirements)
If you are trying to get to Zereth Mortis for the first time, you’ll need to meet a few requirements. Here are the requirements to get the Zereth Mortis intro quest…
- Reach level 60
- Join a covenant
- Complete the first 2 chapters of your covenant campaign (through Torghast)
- Pick up The First Move in Oribos to start the Chains of Domination campaign
- Complete the first 2 chapters of Chains of Domination (through Maw Walkers)
If you aren’t sure where you are in the process, you can open your quest log and see the major covenant and Chains of Domination campaigns in the right bar. If you are really stuck, I would recommend downloading the BtWQuests addon. This will add a dungeon-journal style interface for questlines and show you where you are in the process and what you need to do to get the next quest.
After satisfying all these requirements, you should automatically receive Call of the Primus. If you don’t, you can try re-logging to fix it.
Unlock Zereth Mortis on an alt
All of the requirements above assume you are trying to get to Zereth Mortis on your main character. The requirements are the same, but the process is much easier if you are trying to get to Zereth Mortis on an alt.
To unlock Zereth Mortis on an alt, you will need to reach level 60, join a covenant, and complete the first chapter of the covenant campaign. From there, you can speak to Highlord Bolvar in Oribos to skip the 2nd Torghast chapter.
After that, you’ll need to accept The First Move and then talk to Bolvar again and select the option that says, “I’ve heard this tale before. <Skip Ahead to Korthia>.”
With all those requirements out of the way, you can now accept Call of the Primus on your alt!
How to get back to Zereth Mortis from Oribos
It is pretty easy to get back if you have been to Zereth Mortis before. Completing the first chapter in the Zereth Mortis campaign (up through The Old Waystone) opens a portal from Oribos to ZM. You can find it on the 2nd floor of Oribos at /way 49.5 27.0.
For visual people like me, here is a map:
If you went to Zereth Mortis and didn’t complete the first chapter of the Secrets of the First Ones campaign before leaving, you will need to talk to Tal-Inara in Oribos. You can find Tal-Inara near the Shadowlands map and shattered Helm of Domination, where you turned in Call of the Primus.
Zereth Mortis wormhole generator
You can also travel to Zereth Mortis by wormhole if you are an engineer. To do so, you’ll need to earn and use Enlightened Portal Research. At the time of writing, the only way to earn it is as a random drop from Enlightened paragon caches.
This is frustrating because it means you’ll need to reach exalted with the Enlightened and then fill the bar repeatedly until Enlightened Portal Research drops for you.
Final Thoughts
Now that you have arrived in Zereth Mortis, you can start to unravel the secrets of the First Ones. If you want to stick around, you can also check out one of my other guides on how to unlock Zereth Mortis flying or my guide to the Cyphers of the First Ones currency.
